This is a
very elaborate vase full of fretwork. Three gryphs lean around a
column forming the base. The vase itself has six sides. On two of
them there are two dragons. This pattern is based in a very old
Italian design. I have paid special attention to the inclined sides
of the vase. The original pattern asked for the six sides to be put
together by means of cords. I did not like this system. Instead I
have calculated carefully all the angles formed by the sides and the
floor. The slots of the floor where the sides encase are cut
normally, like any other inner cut. They look bigger than necessary,
but this is because they are calculated exactly for the side pieces
to adopt the necessary angle when encased and glued. The floor is
then covered by a fretworked piece, hiding these slots.
The vase
is designed to be made with 1/4 inches wood or with 6 mm wood. By
scaling the pattern any other similar wood thickness can be used.
The following table gives the dimensions of the vase depending on the
wood thickness you use:
|
Vase Height |
Vase width (dragons
included) |
1/4 in. wood |
13,7 in. |
18,6 in. |
6 mm wood |
32.9 cm |
44.6 cm |
7 mm wood |
38.4 cm |
52 cm |
The
right imag shows the fretworked piece that covers the
floor of the vase. I suggest to use
a contrasting linen behind it to improve
the visual effect.
