052 - Garden box

This is a box restored from a very old French design, one of the oldest scroll saw designs I have ever found, from around 1870. I have kept the flowers motif but I have changed the shape of the borders that was a bit too simple. The flowers are arranged in a quite natural way, which gives the box an informal aspect. The fretwork contains roses, carnations and daisies. The sides of the box can be made either in one piece, covering the interior with linen, or in two pieces, the external one fretworked and the interior one acting as a contrasting wood. The box is completed with two hinges.

The box is designed to be made preferably with 1/4 and 1/8 inches wood or with 6 and 3 mm wood, but of course it can be resized at will to fit any wood thickness. The following table gives the dimensions of the box depending on the wood thickness you use:

Box height Box depth Box width
1/4 and 1/8 in. wood 5,8 in. 6,1 in. 14 in.
6 and 3 mm wood 14 cm 14.6 cm 33.6 cm
