This is a really
peculiar design of a gothic style wall niche for Jesus in the
Cross. On each side of the Cross an angel prays on his
knees, and in the lower part there is a space to keep objects. The
original Italian name of the design is "Cappelletta Acquasantino", this means
that the lower space was originally designed to place a small bottle
containing Holy Water. This pattern is based in a 19th century
Italian design that I have reconstructed completely in the computer.
In the original pattern the Cross was part of the fretwork in the
rear piece. However I have preferred to complete the fretwork of the
rear piece with the same motif and extrude the Cross slightly, to
make it more visible. Furthermore, by doing this the Cross can be
made in a different contrasting wood for a better result.
The
niche is designed to be made preferably with 1/4 and 1/8 inches wood or
with 6 and 3 mm wood, but of course it can be resized at will. The
following table gives the dimensions of the niche depending on the wood thickness you use:
