080 - Sphinxes chandelier

Sphinxes chandelier, scroll saw fretwork pattern

This is a magnificent and alluring 12 arms and 24 lamps chandelier, richly ornamented with sphinxes, gryphs, sheep, and a large number of floral motifs. It is exquisitely designed, visually splendid.

The pattern is based in a masterwork Italian design from the beginning of the 20th century. It is fully computer reconstructed from the original. Even though this is not a project for beginners, special care has been put in making the construction easy for the woodworker, so that any average scroller could complete the project without major problems. Some of the pieces need to be bent to form the two curved surfaces visible in the image. These pieces are to be made in thin wood and they are easily mounted. They are encased in a slot, bent backwards and glued in position on a piece specifically designed for this purpose. The arms are large pieces, but they have been split into minor components so that they can all be cut with an 18 inches scroll saw. The joints of these sections, though discrete, are nevertheless almost completely covered by the different pieces forming the overlay ornamentation of the chandelier.

The pattern has been designed to use 1/4, 1/8 and 1/32 inches wood or 6, 3 and 0,8 mm wood. By scaling the pattern appropriately any other wood thickness can also be used. These are the dimensions of the mirror depending on the wood thickness you use:

Height Diameter
1/4, 1/8 and 1/32 in. wood 51,2 in. 37,4 in.
6, 3 and 0,8 mm wood 123 cm 90 cm
